I loved reading this book, because I also grew up in Norton Acres addition. I saw so much that was familiar and it brought back a lot of memories for me. I am a little younger than the author, so I think the area had improved by the time I remember much, but my brother can really tell some stories about the old neighborhood too. I loved it, but I don't think anyone who was not familiar with the area would appreciate it as much as I did. I am very happy the author has turned things around for himself and has a good life now.Product details

I had seen the picture of the shack Phil was raised in. It was taped above his teacher's desk at school. This was a man that met me cheerfully and honestly my first day at work. I knew he was of heavy metal by experiencing his commitment to students. The book is a quick read with strong implications as you realize just how good you had it growing up in that era. Worth every penny spent and every second of reading it. I highly suggest it for those looking for a book of inspiration to give to those living the life of economic, social, and spiritual poverty.
What a great memoir! I know the author, people he wrote about, and I know the impoverished area he lived in. The book is full of exciting stories as well as photos that enhance the book. Any rating followers should be highly suspicious of any one star ratings as the author has a disgruntled sister posting under fake names. Anyone who loves a great comeback story will love this memoir! I have followed the author's Facebook page and see how this book is doing wonders for teenagers.

This is a fast and easy read. What This man went through and over came is amazing. Great book for kids being bullied or family's on hard times! Hard work pays off!!
What a testimony on how to turn your life around. Phil is living proof that we should never give up. A must read for teens.
Loved this book! Read it in one setting. True story about overcoming poverty and abuse and finally coming out victoriously with help of a few people who invested in his life. As a former foster child myself and now a foster parent for 17 years, I have also seen first hand stories like this and it's refreshing to see such a great success story. I also know this family personally and know that through teaching and coaching, Phil has positively touched the lives of many kids over the years. Also bought a set for a friend as a Christmas gift. My foster daughter, who goes to the high school where Phil teaches, is anxious to read it as well.
